With government announcements, eligibility criteria, and profitability calculations, it can be difficult to navigate. This page aims to provide journalists, content creators, and media with reliable information to better understand this market evolution and the issues surrounding residential solar energy in Quebec.
Residential solar energy is experiencing steady growth in Quebec. Thanks to technological advancements, new financial aids, and a marked interest in energy autonomy, more and more homeowners are choosing to invest in solar installations.
This trend is gradually transforming the market and generating increasing interest from consumers, businesses, and the media.
Interest in residential solar is growing as homeowners seek solutions to reduce their energy costs and increase their autonomy.
Quickly discover the essential data, statistics, and information you need to know about residential solar systems and the financial assistance programs currently available.
A typical family on the South Shore could reduce their electricity bill by about 45% with a grid-tied solar system. With the new financial assistance from Hydro-Québec, the cost of a $20,000 project could be reduced to about $12,000, while generating annual savings of about $1,000.
The assessment does not take into account the anticipated increase in electricity rates, which are expected to continue rising over the years (around 3% per year).
Future Hydro-Québec programs could make battery storage even more advantageous and generate additional savings.
In addition to using electricity provided by Hydro-Québec, you also consume the electricity you produce yourself or that you have stored using equipment you own and operate.
Since your installations are connected to the Hydro-Québec grid, energy exchanges occur like in a system of communicating vessels: electricity flows in both directions according to your needs and your production.

Many misconceptions still circulate about residential solar energy. Here are some commonly heard myths and the facts that help better understand the real potential of solar energy in Quebec.
Solar energy is not profitable in Quebec.
Even in our climate, solar panels produce electricity year-round and can generate significant long-term savings.
Solar panels only work in the summer.
Panels produce energy in all seasons. Their efficiency varies with sunlight, but they continue to produce even in cold weather.
A battery is unnecessary if the house is connected to the grid.
A battery allows you to store produced energy, increase self-consumption, and keep certain equipment running during a power outage.
You must live off-grid to benefit from solar energy.
The majority of residential installations in Quebec are connected to the Hydro-Québec grid and benefit from the net metering program.
Solar panels require a lot of maintenance.
Modern systems require very little maintenance and are designed to operate for several decades.
Savings are negligible.
Depending on the size of the system and the household consumption, savings can amount to several hundred, even several thousand dollars over the lifespan of the installation.
