How to choose the right battery for your trolling motor

When it comes to choosing a deep cycle (DC) battery for your boat, it’s important to take the time to understand what your needs are.

We’ve therefore put together a table that will help you figure out just how many ampere hours you’ll need for your fishing trips. It will also give you an idea of the number of hours you’ll be able to spend on the lake with different DC batteries.

The table features

Average consumption of a trolling motor in relation to its thrust

For how many hours you can use different batteries

Recommended charging amperage for different types of batteries

Electric motor boat

Battery performance chart

* The above figures are approximate and may vary according to the model of your engine and the type of battery you use.

Please note that the above figures correspond to a battery that has been discharged down to 80% of its full capacity.

To optimize the service life of your battery, we recommend that you avoid discharging beyond 50%.

Calculation notes

Speed

The hours in the table were calculated as if the motor were propelling the boat at the same speed without stopping.

But don’t forget that the speed tends to vary depending on what we’re doing.

Consumption

Current and wind affect the average consumption of the motor.

Capacity

Discharging a battery down to 100% of its capacity (Ah) can cause premature wear.

The figures were therefore calculated as if the battery were discharged down to 80% (the maximum recommended level of discharge).
