Lithium Jump Starter

24.03.2017

Since hitting the market in 2013, the lithium jump starter continues to set itself apart.

There's a wide range of brands, quality grades and capacities. So, how do you choose the right one?

Batteries Expert has already done most of the research for you. We offer the best jump starters on the market.

What are the benefits of lithium jump starters?

These devices include a lithium-ion battery or a high discharge lithium polymer battery. Thanks to their lightweight technology, lithium jump starters offer maximum power in a more compact and portable format than standard jump starters. They are a powerful and easy-to-use solution when you need a jump start.

Which one should I choose, the big one or the small one?

To choose the right lithium jump starter, you must first determine the highest electrical current you will need. Example: Let's suppose you own a lawn tractor, a vehicle with a V8 engine and an ATV. Answer: You will need a jump starter that is powerful enough to start the vehicle with the V8 engine and that is also compatible with your other applications.

Note: Jump starter capacities are usually written on the packaging. If you're still unsure, ask your BE expert!

I have never used a lithium jump starter. Is it dangerous?

Most of the jump starters we offer are very easy to use and have built-in safety features that protect against:

  • REVERSE POLARITY – If you hook the clamps up to the wrong battery terminals, your jump starter will detect it and warn you.
  • SPARKS – If the clamps touch, the spark-proof technology will keep you safe!
  • MULTIPLE JUMP STARTS – You can perform several jump starts with a single charge (depending on the model)! Now that's efficient!

I heard that lithium jump starters don't work as well in the cold. Is that true?

Yes, cold can interfere with the performance of lithium-ion devices. When it's colder than the recommended operating temperature, the lithium-ion chemical reaction cools, and the device stops working. Here's a tip for this kind of situation: If your jump starter isn't functioning properly in the cold, use another of its features (flashlight, USB charger) to warm it up. Soon it will be ready to perform at full capacity.

That is why it's important to choose a robust jump starter that will operate efficiently in a wide range of temperatures, like NOCO products (-22ºF/30ºC to 176ºF/80ºC). However, it is absolutely essential that you follow the manufacturer's instructions concerning the temperature range for use and storage. This will keep it functioning properly and prevent damage—and your jump starter will be ready to use when you need it most.

Is it really worth it to invest in a lithium jump starter just in case my battery dies?

A jump starter's main function is to help you out when your battery dies at the worst possible moment. Investing in a jump starter is almost like paying for emergency road service, except that you'll be able to handle the situation yourself and much faster!

More than just a jump starter!

The lithium jump starters we sell are not only compact, lightweight and portable, they have other very practical features that come in handy in many situations:

  • BUILT-IN ULTRA-BRIGHT LED FLASHLIGHT that comes with different light modes, such as SOS and emergency strobe. It's useful for camping, changing a tire or signalling your presence in an emergency.
  • PORTABLE POWER BANK with a USB port for charging your personal electronic devices (smart phone, tablet, etc.). Just have your power bank on you at all times.
  • KEEP IT HANDY IN A STORAGE BOX in your car, motorcycle, boat, RV or in your BACKPACK, BRIEFCASE, ETC.!

I heard that you need to charge your jump starter every three months or it won't work when you need it to. Is that true?

The main advantages of lithium batteries are their power-to-weight ratio and low self-discharge rate compared to other types of batteries, which reduce the necessary charging frequency. In addition, lithium jump starters can be recharged quickly and easily with a 12-V USB car charger (usually included with the device) or any other compatible USB module.

However, it is strongly recommended to charge your jump starter before and after use. You'll quickly see just how versatile our lithium jump starters are. They are a worthy investment you'll use time and time again! You certainly won't let yours collect dust in your glove compartment!
